It's certainly quaint, the atmosphere warm and inviting even without that many customers there right now. There's a menu on the table with a wide variety of desserts and coffees, or you could simply take a seat up at the counter. Regardless of where you sit though, the girl behind the counter will call out to you.]

So, what's it gonna be? [In a red leather jacket and kimono, she probably doesn't seem like she's actually working here, but ??? it's not like anyone else is asking, right.]

b. the opposite of a warm welcome

[This is where I just start laughing at meta, I'm sorry. YOU'RE TAKING A WALK DOWN THE STREET, just a regular day in your canon universe because it's peaceful and what do you have to worry about, right!! Sorry that's about to all go down the drain though.

OUT OF NOWHERE, there's a girl swiping at you with a very dangerous, very sharp-looking knife. Her eyes glow unnaturally bright blue and magenta, and it doesn't matter if you haven't even said a word to her, she's glaring daggers at you. Here's hoping you were able to dodge.]

Ain considers this for a moment. While he didn't quite believe in aimless annihilation, perhaps killing her would give her some sort of mercy from inexplicable desires. A salvation in Henir away from the constraints of time...

He lets his pendulum hang in his right hand, weighing it a little. ]

[Wow is that what she's fighting..... HOW COOL she's practically starry-eyed. Sadly, after having spent two years in the void of death already, she's not particularly keen on going back.]

[ That's a shame. Hopefully she'll be dissuaded from attacking him then. Ain folds his arms, letting his pendulum trail out. ]

All things die eventually. Do you fear death?

[ Ain sighs for real this time. Foolish humans... how their transient lives blinded them to the truth that lay beyond time. He extends his left hand, and a green spark fades from his palm. ]

It's nothing to be afraid of. Death frees you from the physical shackles of this realm. [ Pitiful creations of the Goddess, destined to suffer and then wink out. ] Offer yourself to the void and your pain will be absolved.

[ See, he's a nice reaper. He's even bothering to smile a bit. ]

[ALAS, his smile is not appreciated in this case. She might struggle to even feel alive without risking her life in a battle, but she's made her peace of going without the peace death grants a while ago now.]

And give up? I already saw what's in that "void," and I'm telling you no thanks.

[ He wonders now how she would turn away from the void despite having seen it. Fear and pain should be annulled completely within the abyss, so perhaps she had merely seen one of the upper layers of the void.

Still, he's not going to push it if she expressed her unwillingness. ]

That's fine. I'm sure you will change your mind eventually. [ Maybe he'll run into her again when she's old and dying. Most humans tend to think differently at that time. ]

However, if you wish to fight me, I cannot guarantee your body will stay here.

[THAT'S PRACTICALLY THE WHOLE POINT EVEN. If there's no risk, she's not interested. And what could be riskier than fighting an actual grim reaper?]

You said it yourself, right? Everything dies eventually. I'm just here to see if that's true.

[ She said she wasn't willing to die, yet was willing to try dying. Ms. Weird is living up to her name. ]

Very well. Don't forget, you chose this fate of your own free will.

[ The pendulum's chain snaps into a straight line, and in the next instant it has turned into a scythe. His visage as a youth in a white hood begins to crumble, making his form a strange overlay of human and... reaper, as it were.

Of course, he won't make the first move. ]

[Look, if he didn't want to get in a fight, he could've just tried leaving!! He doesn't have to acquiesce!!!! Even if Shiki would've just hunted him down after.............

Which is to say that Shiki wastes no time in making her move. Given that she's the challenger, it's only right, isn't it? She unsheathes her knife from behind her obi in one fluid motion before charging in, intent on swiping at his chest.]

[ Like he said, it's her choice. Ultimately, she has to pay the price.

He makes no move to block her lunge, and her dagger pierces through his chest. But there's no blood - rather, his physical form crumbles much like a piece of cloth to reveal an empty gap where flesh and blood should be.

She might want to withdraw her hand from that hole, because his scythe is coming down on her within the next few moments. ]

[It's definitely interesting, but not so much that she isn't aware of her surroundings still, and she dodges with a jump to the side. Since she already knew he wasn't human, it's not too surprising to see that his body is abnormal. She'll just have to keep cutting away at whatever it is that hides his true form. It'd be easier to do that than just try and see through it when she knows she can break it down anyways.

This time, she aims to stab his stomach.]

[ Given that a scythe has a semicircular blade, he wields it as one would a wheel; spinning the heavy weapon as if it was weightless in his hands. While not lightning-fast as Shiki's strikes are, the scythe itself hums with a green energy that would sting if she ever came into contact with it.

He lets her stab him, and the illusion of his human form shatters in part. Her knife hits blackened skin, which... doesn't really seem to be there. The blade comes out clean. ]

You gonna drop the charade anytime soon, or do I have to peel it back myself?

[Not that she necessarily has a problem with that, but she wants to see what she's really fighting against already.]

[ Patience, child. Unless you wish to live on the true edge... ]

He sighs, a sound that echoes more in the mental plane than the physical. Black mist floods from the holes she's cut into him, dripping onto the cold tarmac and pooling around them. Blackened hands rise from the water, grasping at her legs and feet.

In contrast, his revealed form is a lurid, skeletal white. His scythe twirls around him, keeping her temporarily away while the fog tries to stuff itself into her lungs. ]
