home is where you are

She couldn’t find her spare key.

This was stupid and she knew it, but she was looking for that key, and of course the one time she actually needs it, she can’t find it. It didn’t happen often, but on the rare occasions she forgot her regular key, she kept a spare underneath the potted plant that stood between the door to her apartment and the one next door. She’d forgotten it last week in fact, Tuesday to be exact, but she’d found the spare like usual that day. Now? Either someone stole it and decided to be an ass by robbing her place and locking her out, or she’d actually managed to misplace it.

Minako was kind of hoping it was the former. It was easier to punch someone else in the face out of frustration rather than herself, after all.

Thunking her head against the unforgiving frame of her door, she sunk down until she was leaning against it. Here she was, having faced monster shadows and monster witches and monster tests down, and she was being done in by a key.

“I can’t believe this,” she whined pathetically, breath coming out in a white puff. It was cold too. Just when she was ready to resign herself to sleeping in the cold, she caught a familiar face in the corner of her eye.

Or, well, a familiar silhouette to be completely honest. It was hard to miss a pompadour like that, alright?

“Oh, hey Minako!” Josuke’s familiar voice boomed through the small hallway. If she hadn’t felt like strangling someone (possibly herself), she would’ve cracked a smile at that alone. As it was though, his warm, comfortable smile was nice regardless. Seeing her leaning against the door so listlessly though, confusion leaked into his voice. “What’re you doing out here...?”

She remained quiet for a moment, something she knew was already unusual given how much she could talk. Especially when she was talking with Josuke. Was there any non-lame way to say “Either I’m going to tear this door down with my bare hands or I’m sleeping in the lobby like an actual hobo”? Probably not. Letting out a long, long sigh, Minako finally stood back up properly.

“I’m locked out,” she said simply, but god she felt lame. Sure he knew she forgot her key last Tuesday, but that was mostly because she hung out at his place instead of opening up hers right away. Maybe she could ask if she could crash at his place until she could call up a locksmith? No, that would be even worse, and it was probably a bit much to be getting this worked up over a misplaced key in the first place, but she was honestly frustrated. Upset, even. He must have been able to tell despite her even expression, because not soon after he wrapped an arm around her shoulders, warm and solid as he pulled her closer. Despite herself, she leaned into him, their height difference just right for her to tuck herself into him even when standing.

“Hey, don’t sweat it! Why not just hang out at my place again?” he laughed easily, moving his hand up and down her arm to warm her. She almost wanted to tell him he was like a big, cuddly furnace even without that, but it was comfortable and comforting all the same. He always was, really.

“Or,” he began again, that same glint in his eye he always got when he thought of a Dumb Idea, the same challenging tone in his voice, “I could just change to my Weapon form, and then you could punch the stupid door down no problem!”

“Josuke!” She punched him playfully in his side, never mind that she had half an idea to do that anyways. “Come on, I don’t want to cause any trouble here! Besides, are we even really allowed to change outside of practice and missions? –You know what, don’t even answer that. I’ll just go sleep in the lobby for tonight.”

He jokingly winced at her punch, feigning hurt (because she knew he knew what a real punch from her would’ve felt like, and that would’ve been a whole other story), but at her decision to turn hobo for a day, Josuke suddenly let go of her, and she would’ve complained about being cold again if not for his hands at her back, pushing her towards his apartment already.

“No way, I’m not letting you just sleep out like that! Look, just hang out with me for tonight, and then tomorrow we can figure out what to do about your—”

He stopped dead in his tracks suddenly, and Minako had half a mind to take the chance to insist on just sleeping downstairs, but instead tilted her head up to look at him and ask, “Josuke? What is it?”

“Shit, I knew I was forgetting something!” He dropped his hands so quickly from her back that she almost lost balance until he reached out to steady her again, and when she turned around she could see he had his hand shoved into his coat pocket, looking for something. It took a few more moments (jeez, just what did Josuke have in that pocket?) before he finally fished out—

Her spare key.

“Remember when you came over last Tuesday? This must’ve slipped outta your pocket while you were there, and I didn’t even notice it till you left.” Taking her hand, he gently dropped the key into her palm, closing her fingers around it with his own. His hands were rough and calloused, the knuckles and joints a little knobby from what must have been times where he’d broken them, probably fights, but they were warm and Josuke, and when she looked back up at his face he was smiling, half-embarrassed like the whole thing had been an unfortunate accident on his part. “Sorry it took me this long to get it back to you.”

She didn’t even care that they were in the middle of a very public hallway.

Throwing her arms around him, she practically leapt up, whispering “Thank you, thank you, thank you” in his ear until she was laughing and breathless, and once he made it past surprise over the sudden jump, he started laughing too, his arms around her back as he spun her around.

He always managed to save her, just in the nick of time; this time was no exception. Now that she thought about it too, it was probably safer to leave her spare key with him rather than leave it to a plant anyways. She’d have to tell him about that later.

But for now, she pushed those thoughts aside. At the moment, she had other plans, and those involved her lips on his.
