“Giorno? Can I ask you a question?” She called out softly, hesitantly, still looking at her hands. They shook faintly, a tremble that had yet to go away, leftover from her earlier nightmare.
“Of course. What is it?”
“If I did something wrong,” she started, pausing then stopping. That wasn’t quite right. “Something bad... You would do everything that you could to stop me, wouldn’t you?”
He looked at her curiously despite his facial expression not changing by much from his usual stoic calm—Estelle liked to think she could tell that much at least, after all this time. He was curious, she knew, but she didn’t want to explain. How were you supposed to tell someone that you hurt your friends, that the strongest you ever were was when you tried to kill the people you loved?
And she was scared. Estelle didn’t know everything that Haven could do, but she knew enough to realize that it was a very real possibility that they could get their hands on the system Alexei created to control her. She didn’t know how or if they’d even know how to use it, but—it was possible. And sure she might have broken through it before, but that wasn’t until she was desperate enough to make it all stop that she was willing to die.
It scared her.
“You wouldn’t do anything bad.”
She bit her lip. Any other time, Giorno’s usual unwavering confidence in her would be all the reassurance she needed. Right now, it was almost like a weight, heavy on her mind.
“I know you have faith that I wouldn’t do something like that, and I’m grateful for it, but—please. I need to know if you will.”
He remained silent, as if he wanted to say something else, but soon enough he nodded, eyes as calm and serious as they always were. “I would stop you.”
Letting out the breath she didn’t even realize she was holding, Estelle smiled for the first time since she’d seen him that night. Maybe she was worrying for nothing, and she knew that her friends would stop her again if it happened, but... To know that Giorno would do everything he could to stop her, to not let her do something like that—she was glad.
“Thank you, Giorno.”
